Hello, I'm Maria

This is my story

Although I am affectionately known as Cuti by those close to me, my given name is Maria Carmen. My family lineage is of Catalan origin and it is from this cultural heritage that my story unfolds.

My childhood was enriched by the presence of women who possessed incredible culinary skills. Bepeta, my great grandmother and Conxita, my grandmother, were particularly exceptional cooks. My mother, who remains my personal superhero, also excels in the kitchen. She is meticulous about using only the freshest seasonal ingredients and respects the importance of upholding culinary traditions. My mother’s influence has not only taught me everything there is to know about Catalan and Spanish cuisine but also the virtues of hard work, unconditional love and compassion.

My paternal grandmother, a skilled couturier, played a pivotal role in channelling my creative energies towards various art forms such as painting, sewing and drawing. She was renowned for designing exquisite dresses for the most fashionable women in Lleida, my hometown. At the height of her career, she oversaw a team of fourteen women who worked for her. She was a trailblazer in her industry, demonstrating remarkable leadership qualities that enabled her to establish a profitable business at a time when women were undervalued in our society.

Throughout my life, I had the privilege of spending many years with three great grandmothers, each one with a unique story of resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship during the Spanish Civil War. From them, I learned the art of cooking and the importance of respecting and cherishing family, as well as the virtues of generosity. Not once did I ever witness any of them complaining about the many challenges they faced. Despite living in a time where they lacked many basic rights, they were the backbone of our families, always striving to make us better people who contribute positively to the world around us. Above all, they taught us the value of perseverance, courage and hope even in the darkest of times.

My family

During my great grandmother’s era, our region was marked by poverty, populated by farmers who eked out a living from cultivating various crops, ranging from fruit trees to vegetables. Thanks to the tireless efforts of many locals who held their traditions and lands dear, the region evolved from its humble origins into something far more significant. Today, it stands as one of the foremost centres of fruit, vegetables and pork production in Spain and Europe, celebrated for its warm hospitality, stunning orchards teeming with pink blooms, captivating Romanic art and unwavering commitment to family and tradition, especially the reverence and adoration we hold for our grandparents.

My family is my greatest source of joy and love. Both my biological and adopted family from Mallorca treat me with such kindness, respect and support that I cannot help but feel happy when I am in their company. I am really fortunate to have found an incredible husband, whom not only do I adore but so does my entire family – especially my mother. He hails from Mallorca, which he deems as the “best place in the World”. He is not only intelligent, kind  and generous but also compassionate and loving. In addition to his endearing qualities, he also excels in the culinary arts, specialising in preparing the mouth-watering fish from his beloved island.

While he has 2 children from a prior relationship, we were unable to have a child together. Although this has posed a great challenge for me in the past, I’m fortunate to share a wonderful bond with our nephews, especially the ones from Lleida. Over time, I have developed a profound connection with Gabriela, my sister’s daughter.

As the second of four siblings, my family has unfortunately become a family of 5 since May of 2023, when my dear sister Olga lost her battle with cancer. I pause here to extend my deepest sympathies to anyone who has been affected by this dreadful disease. It is my fervent hope that medical researchers will soon find a cure so that nobody has to suffer in the way that my sister did. Despite facing her illness for six long years, Olga remained a beacon of strength and positivity. She was always there to encourage me and remind me of my worth.

My cooking

From a young age, I’ve possessed a vibrant sense of creativity that I’ve sought to express in various ways. Though it hasn’t always been easy, I’ve persistently pursued outlets for my artistic impulses. As a teenager, I struggled to fit in and actively avoided conforming to the expectations of others. To express my individuality, I turned to fashion and sought to dress in a way that distinguished me from my peers. Unfortunately, my unique style and message were not widely understood or valued by many, with the exception of my father who consistently supported my yearning for freedom and the desire to follow my dreams.

Over time, I discovered a new medium for my creativity in food, which has since captivated my interest and allowed me to channel my imaginative energies.

Combining my passions, I pursued studies in both Fashion Design and Economy. Throughout my career in the insurance industry, I made a point to infuse every project with my creative flair. Although my brother Borja, once suggested that I abandon insurance for a culinary venture, I never quite found the courage to make such a leap.

Following the passing of my beloved sister, I was struck with the idea of honouring her memory and the unwavering faith she had in me by creating something truly unique. With the goal of sharing authentic Spanish cuisine with people across the globe, I am inspired to place food at the forefront, while also incorporating meaningful stories and anecdotes into each dish. Utilising Olga’s Instagram handle as a starting point is my personal tribute to her and a means of potentially making her and my cherished Gabriela proud of what I can achieve.

In my conversations with Gabriela, I make a point to talk about her mother and the admirable actions she took to safeguard and enhance her life during the trying times of illness. This way, she can keep her mother’s memory alive and appreciate the beautiful deeds she accomplished.

Gabriela, this is a heartfelt tribute to your Mum and to you, so that her memory will always remain alive in your heart through the dishes that we used to lovingly prepare for her. May every meal remind you of the precious moments shared with her and keep her spirit forever present in your life.
